Help For Homeless Vets: Oregon Receives Housing Vouchers For 62

PORTLAND, OR – Help is on its way for homeless veterans in Oregon. Housing authorities in Portland, Washington County, and Clackamas County received a total of $554,570 to provide housing vouchers to 62 homeless veterans.

Oregon was one of seven states and the District of Columbia to receive just over $4.6 million to provide vouchers to 424 homeless veterans.

The grants are administered by a joint program operated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said that the vouchers "will improve the lives of many veterans who are currently homeless by helping them find a place to call home and reintegrate back into their families and communities."

The grants follow action by the departments in October that provided groups $35 million to help more than 4,000 veterans find permanent homes.

In Oregon, the grants went to the Housing Authority of Clackamas County, the Housing Authority of Portland, and the Housing Authority of Washington County.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimated last month that there are 1,363 homeless veterans in Oregon, 763 of whom are completely without shelter.
