- Portland's Mayor Ted Wheeler announced earlier this week that the city will be partnering with the National Institute of Criminal Justice Reform in an effort to curb an increase in gun violence this summer. The new program focuses on unifying the community, law enforcement, and other government partners to ensure the city remains as safe as possible. It will offer services like relocating people to safer locations, opportunities to complete a diploma, and help finding permanent employment for those in areas most affected by gun violence. (KPTV)
- Two local nonprofit organizations announced they will be partnering in order to provide more food accessibility for individuals in low-income families. Outgrowing Hunger is an organization that focuses on buying land within the Portland area to give families and local farmers the opportunity to grow produce as needed, but land for these community gardens is becoming more and more expensive. By partnering with Rockwood Community Development, the organization is hoping that it will help alleviate some of the costs and help secure more federal funding. (KGW.com)
- Due to an increase in burglaries, a long-standing record store in Portland has shut down one of its two locations. Exiled Records, the locally-owned business, shared via social media that it will be closing its relatively newer location in Southeast Hawthorne. The owner is devastated to be closing down such a beloved store but encourages avid listeners to stop at the other location for exclusives on new vinyls, CDs, and tapes. (KOIN)
