Hardesty was first elected in 2018, the first Black woman to hold the position.

A couple of weeks ago, the Portland Police Bureau completed an internal probe into the leaking of a police report that wrongly implicated Hardesty, a long-time critic of the Police Bureau. The results of the investigation have not yet been released.
