Man Attacked With Exotic Knife In Downtown Portland Thursday

Dameon Hooverrhodes allegedly struck the 42-year-old victim multiple times with a Nepalese machete-like weapon called a kukri.

PORTLAND, OR — A 42-year-old man on Thursday was attacked by a total stranger wielding an exotic knife while leaving a downtown Portland union hall, according to Portland police. The attacker was later arrested.

Dameon Ryan Hooverrhodes, 38, was taken to Multnomah County Jail on one charge of felony assault. His bail is set at $250,000.

Central Precinct officers were reportedly dispatched to the assault around 6:15 p.m. Jan. 25.

The victim, police learned, was catching a ride from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 8 Hall at 2435 N.W. Front Ave. when he came across another man standing near the union hall's door as he was leaving.

The stranger, later identified as Hooverrhodes, reportedly spoke with the victim briefly before he began chasing the man, striking him multiple times with a long, curved blade called a kukri — a Nepalese knife similar to a machete, save for its curving shape.

The victim continued running to his awaiting ride, jumping into the car while Hooverrhodes allegedly continued to strike at him with the kukri. Already inside the car were the driver and two children.

Hooverrhodes reportedly broke one of the car's windows during his frenzied attacked before the driver was able to pull away. Neither the driver nor the children were physically harmed.

En route to hospital, the driver called 911 to report the incident and provide police Hooverrhodes' description.

When officers arrived at the union hall, they quickly found Hooverrhodes and took him into custody without further incident.

The victim of Hooverrhodes' alleged attack sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries from the kukri, police said.

Anyone else who may have witnessed the attack or has information that could help the investigation is asked to call Detective Paul Dolbey at 503-823-0451, or email Paul.Dolbey@portlandoregon.gov.
