Portland metro partygoers offered free public transit, reduced rideshare prices on New Year's Eve (kgw.com) — If you’re going out in Portland on New Year’s Eve, you can ride TriMet, C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar for free and even snag PBOT coupons for discounted Uber and Lyft rides. The Safe Ride Home program aims to cut impaired driving and nighttime crashes on Portland streets, with extended late-night service and $10 rideshare discounts starting this evening.
   

2. Portland overnight shelters could soon stay open 24 (katu.com) — If you’re unhoused or know someone who is, Portland and Multnomah County are preparing to convert some overnight shelters into 24-hour sites during severe cold snaps, with the city even exploring earlier openings. Current shelters are nearing capacity as temperatures drop into the 30s, and officials say expanding hours is key to keeping more Portlanders safely indoors on the coldest nights.
   

3. Portland cemetery to move grave after selling the burial site twice: 'Something that cannot be repaired' (kgw.com) — A Portland family is fighting a court-ordered removal of their son’s grave at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Northwest Portland after the cemetery mistakenly sold the same plot to two different families. Despite the mother’s objections and offers of a refund or new plot, an Oregon court ruled the original buyers legally own the site, and the disinterment is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
   

4. Joe Etzel, University of Portland's longtime athletic director, dies at 87 (koin.com) — Portland’s sports community is mourning Joe Etzel, the University of Portland’s longtime athletic director, who died Sunday at age 87. Over more than three decades, Etzel expanded Pilots athletics from six to 16 varsity sports, coached baseball for 21 seasons, and helped guide the program to dozens of conference championships.
