  1. A federal court security officer shot a man near Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland on Monday morning, resulting in one person being hospitalized. The incident led to the closure of Southwest 6th Avenue between Southwest Morrison and Southwest Yamhill, as well as Pioneer Courthouse Square. The injured man is expected to survive; the officer was taken to a hospital for non-shooting-related injuries. (Fox 12 Oregon)
  2. The Portland area is bracing for scorching temperatures in the 90s, prompting a heat advisory from the National Weather Service for today and tomorrow. Despite the potential heatwave, Multnomah County officials currently have not reported any intention of opening cooling shelters, and with libraries closed for the holiday, residents without air conditioning may face limited options to stay cool during the moderate heat risk period. 3. Portland State University is officially the first university in the Pacific Northwest to offer a Chicano/Latino studies major, responding to the growing interest and increased Latinx student population from 7 percent in 2011 to 18 percent in 2022. The new major aims to provide a sense of belonging and validation for the expanding Latinx student community, with plans to become a Hispanic Serving Institution in the future. The program is set to launch in the upcoming Fall semester; those interested can learn more at pdx.edu. (Fox 12 Oregon)
