Here are the top three stories in Portland today:

  1. A man in Southeast Portland shares his harrowing experience of being shot while defending his son's car from thieves, an incident that almost cost him his life, prompting him to express anxiety when recalling the event. He had confronted thieves breaking into cars in the past but noticed the situation worsening. On the day of the shooting, he saw two men breaking into their car and yelled at them to scare them away, but one of the suspects requested a gun and shot him at close range. Despite his recovery, he has learned from the incident and no longer advocates confronting thieves, emphasizing the importance of personal safety. (KPTV)
  2. The planned overhaul of Portland Public Schools' social studies curriculum for middle and high school students, costing $5 million, has been delayed by three years until September 2026, making it nearly a 20-year gap since the last update in 2008. The district faced challenges in implementing previous curriculum changes, particularly due to pandemic disruptions and is prioritizing the full implementation of new instructional materials for English language arts before introducing a new social studies curriculum. The district aims to address concerns and gather feedback from families, students, and teachers while also ensuring alignment with state standards and requirements. (Oregon Live)
  3. Portland's Police Bureau identified a man found dead in the Rosewood neighborhood after a shooting over the weekend. The shooting happened near a local Popeyes, roughly around 11:18 p.m. Officers arrived at the scene to discover a 19-year-old injured in the street. The victim died while on the scene before an ambulance could transport him to the hospital. Police are still searching for the suspect(s) and ask anyone with information to call. (KPTV)
