Multnomah County Burn Ban Begins Friday

Campfires, fire pits, yard debris and agricultural burnings have all been banned until further notice due to escalating summer weather.

PORTLAND, OR — As of Friday, July 13, all outdoor burning is banned in Multnomah County due to weather forecasts calling for increased temperatures, limited rainfall, and ongoing dry conditions, according to the Multnomah County Fire Defense Board.

Included in the temporary ban are recreational campfires, fire pits, the burning of yard debris, and any agricultural burnings. Additionally, permits that were previously granted to allow for open burnings have been rescinded until further notice.

While the ban does not apply to backyard barbecues, Multnomah Fire Defense Board Chief Scott Lewis urges summer revelers to exercise extreme caution when using charcoal briquettes.

"Please properly dispose of ashes in a covered metal container away from combustibles, and keep the ashes wet for a few days before properly disposing of them," Lewis said in a statement Thursday. "Maintain at least ten feet between outdoor cooking and anything combustible such as siding, fences, shrubbery, etc. … Smokers are reminded to ensure their cigarettes are truly out and placed in proper receptacles."
