N. Portland Sewer Project To Cause Traffic Delays For 2 Months

Lanes along NE Killingsworth Street will be closed at all times but evening rush hour for 2 months between NE MLK Jr. Blvd. and NE 8th Ave.

PORTLAND, OR — City crews for the next two months will need to periodically close lanes along Northeast Killingsworth Street for a sewer construction project, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services officials announced Friday. The project is slated to begin Aug. 27.

The city plans to replace more than 3 miles of sewer pipes that are all nearing a century in use. Replacing the deteriorating sewer lines will protect the public and environment by limiting the potential for accidental sewer leaks into homes, businesses, and streets, officials said in a statement.

Periodic lane closures along Northeast Killingsworth Street during construction will occur between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Eighth Avenue, near the Portland Police Bureau's North Precinct and a North Portland Post Office.

During the two-month project one lane of travel will remain open at all times, except during evening rush hour from 4 to 7 p.m., when construction will stop and all lanes will be open. Construction will also stop on Sundays and holidays, officials said.

Flaggers and warning signs will be present at all times during construction, but bicycle and motorized vehicle travel should take extra care and travel through the construction areas with caution.
