Missing Ohio Man Found Alive On Mount St. Helens: Sheriff

Matthew Matheny, missing since last Thursday, was reportedly found alive Wednesday on the flanks of Mount St. Helens.

COWLITZ COUNTY, WA — An Ohio man who was reported missing after not returning from hiking the Blue Lake Trail near Mount St. Helens last week was reportedly found alive on Wednesday, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office. Matthew B. Matheny, 40, of Warrenton, Ohio, hadn't been seen since around 7 a.m. Aug. 9, officials said.

Matheny had traveled to the Pacific Northwest and borrowed a local friend's car to visit the mountain, but those friends reported him missing when he didn't return.

A Skamania County Sheriff's deputy found the car, a gray Subaru Outback, at the Blue Lake Trailhead in Cowlitz County on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Search and rescue teams scoured the area but did not immediately locate anything leading them to Matheny. Officials on Monday clarified they had no reason to believe foul play was a part of Matheny's disappearance.

Sheriff's officials announced they'd found Matheny around 12 p.m. Aug. 15. This post will be updated when more information is available.
