OR Daycare Didn't Shut Down Despite Illegal Drug Usage: Report

A daycare provider who admitted to using drugs continued to care for children even though her license wasn't renewed, the Oregonian said.

OREGON -- An Oregon daycare provider who admitted to using drugs continued to care for children even though her license wasn't renewed, the Oregonian reported this week. The incident reportedly happened at Sugar Pine, a Portland daycare.

In a series of watchdog articles, the Oregonian details the problems parents face when finding information about day care providers in the state.

The newspaper reported that Sugar Pine owner Sarah Herbelin "admitted to using illegal drugs" but kept her business open.

"So, when Sugar Pine ignored the state and stayed open, Erin Sanders kept taking her two kids to the in-home day care this year, unaware of any problems," the Oregonian wrote.

In another story, a parent told the Oregonian she didn't know two infants had died at the day care her son attends.

"That's because regulators provide scant information on a state website intended to help parentsresearch and make educated decisions about childcare," wrote the newspaper. "A website that fails parents is one of the many daunting problems facing Oregon's Office of Child Care, the state agency responsible for regulating some 4,200 day cares who watch over 100,000 children statewide."
