Oregon Air National Guard 142nd Fighter Wing Honors Portland

The wing's flagship F-15 Eagle will be unveiled at a ceremony on Saturday with new nose art depicting the city.

PORTLAND, OR – The Oregon Air National Guard's 142nd Fighter Wing will honor Portland, the city it calls home, with a special ceremony on Saturday. The wing will unveil a F-15 Eagle with nose art showing the city.

The F-15, the wing's flagship plane, is being redone as part of the 142nd's Cities of Honor program.

The program was started in 2007 and built on a tradition dating back to World War 2 when airmen would decorate their aircraft to celebrate their unit. Get all the latest information on what's happening in Portland by signing up for Patch's newsletters and breaking news alerts.

The wing will host Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler for the ceremony. He will also be given a tour of the base.

The base, which employs around 1,500 airmen, protects the airspace between the Canadian border and northern California. They were recently scrambled as part of the response when a man at Sea-Tac stole a plane.
