Here are the top three stories today in Portland:

  1. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch in the Portland area from Friday, May 12, through Monday, May 15. Portland could have record-breaking temperatures over the weekend, predicted to be rising over 90 degrees. Weather conditions are predicted to be similar to the deadly heat dome event in 2021, which killed 69 people in Multnomah County. NWS meteorologist Daniel Hartsock said, "We’re looking at temperatures 20 to 25 degrees above normal, so that’s definitely not very common." (OPB)
  2. Portland Police identified the victim who died in the May 9 Hazelwood Neighborhood shooting as 37-year-old Justin Joki. Officers found Joki near the intersection of East Burnside Street and Northeast 122nd Avenue with a fatal gunshot wound, which was later determined to be a homicide. Portland Police Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the incident. (Portland Police Bureau)
  3. Workers began to remove the boards from the windows of the Multnomah County Circuit Courthouse in Portland and should finish within days. County spokesperson Julie Sullivan-Springhetti said, "We are working actively on strategies that will help restore the vitality of downtown Portland, especially around the beautiful courthouse." But the wooden perimeter wall surrounding the courthouse block, as well as the one around the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse, will remain until “further solutions” can be found. (Oregon Live)
