Portland Leaf Pickup Season Gets Underway With Two Stops

For the first time since 2010, the city's picking up leaves for free. Portland is split into 52 pickup districts. The last pickup is Dec, 18

PORTLAND, OR – While many trees throughout the city are still covered in trees, pretty much everyone agrees on one thing. It won't last long.

The city is particularly concerned about what happens when the leaves – driven by wind and rains (it is Oregon and they will be here before long) – fall to the ground.

Left unattended, they clog sewers and cause street flooding and other problems.

For years, ending in 2010, the city provided leaf pickup service for free. That ended in 2011. Every year since, the city has charged residents $15 for the service.

That's over this year. Pickup season is again free. And it's underway.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has divided the city into 51 districts and the first two pickups were Friday – both in Northeast Portland.

Pickups continue Saturday and continue through December 18. Some area will receive two pickups over the next six weeks.
