Man Collecting Cans And Bottles In North Portland Killed In Crash

Officers believe that "intoxication" on the part of a driver played a role as he crashed into several parked cars and the man who died..

PORTLAND, OR – Jason Barns, a 32-year-old from Tigard, was walking along the 7400 block of North Willamette Boulevard late Thursday night, collecting cans and bottles. As he did so, the man, whose name and age have not been released, he was struck by what police say was a red Volvo sedan.

Barns was rushed to a local hospital where he died.

Portland Police say that officers from the North Precinct had arrived at the scene at 11:17 p.m. after getting a car of a multi-car crash.

Police say that the driver of a red Volvo, 23-year-old Calum M. Breitenberg, had crashed into several parked cars and the man collecting cans.

Officials say that Breitenberg was was driving west on North Willamette Boulevard when the crash happened. They believe that speed and intoxications were factors.

Breitenberg was arrested at the scene and is charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence, and reckless endangering.

Barns was the 33rd traffic crash related death in Portland this year.
