Portland Man Escapes Home As Business Next Door Burns

An early morning fire destroyed Erick's Auto Tech. The man who lived in attached home escaped but will have to find another place to stay.

PORTLAND, OR – A close call for a man in Southeast Portland early Tuesday morning. The man lived in a home attached to an auto shop that was badly damaged by fire.

Officials say that before 1 a.m., firefighters arrived at Erich's Auto Tech at 8683 Southeast Stark to find the auto repair shop fully engulfed in flames.

A second-alarm was immediately called. The fire was so intense that firefighters had to take a defensive approach. The building was described as a "near total loss" by fire officials. A man who lived in an attached building managed to make it out safely. He's going to have find another place to live for now.

A pet cat has yet to be found but is believed to have made it out safely as well.
