Portland Public Schools Vaccine Mandate Town Hall Attract Critics

Portland Public Schools is considering a vaccine mandate for all students 12 years old and older. Two town halls are coming up Thursday.

PORTLAND, OR — Portland Public Schools is considering requiring all students 12 years old and older to get vaccinated. If they don't, they didn't there's a chance they wouldn't be allowed to attend in-person learning. The district isn't close to making a decision.

As part of the process, they are holding five town hall meetings. All are being held on Zoom.

Three were held Tuesday.

The first had parents from Ida B. Wells, Lincoln, and Roosevelt. That was followed by parents from Grant, McDaniel, Jefferson, and the Multiple Pathways to Graduation programs. The last group had parents from Cleveland, Franklin, and Benson.

Several parents expressed skepticism, some citing discrediting information about vaccine dangers. Other parents were supportive.

The fourth and fifth meetings are Thursday.

The first one is from 9-10:30 a.m. and is for Spanish-speaking PPS families.

The second is one is from 4-6:30 p.m. and is only open to students.

Each meeting opens with a five-minute introduction by board members and staff followed by questions from students.
