Protesters Force ICE To Temporarily Close Portland Facility

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Portland will reopen after security concerns have been addressed, ICE officials said.

PORTLAND, OR — Protesters have succeeded in their mission to at least temporarily force the closure of a Portland-based regional office for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a Wednesday report from OPB.

Occupy ICE PDX demonstrators began gathering at the unassuming facility on Sunday night to protest the federal policy to separate children from their parents at the U.S. border. By Tuesday, the number of protesters had grown considerably, OPB said.

With protesters blocking vehicles from coming or going from the facility, ICE officials on Wednesday announced it would cease operations at the Portland office until "security concerns have been addressed."

Appointments scheduled for Wednesday were canceled, OPB said, noting a statement from ICE that indicated those appointments would be rescheduled and not treated as missed check-ins.
