Transient Charged With Assault In Portland: Police

Juan Lopez allegedly broke a man's car window before pistol-whipping him Saturday evening.

PORTLAND, OR — A dispute over money resulted in one arrest early Sunday after one of the men involved allegedly pistol-whipped another man.

Juan Lopez, 57, was taken to Multnomah County Jail and charged with assault. His bail is set at $250,000.

A 34-year-old man reportedly told Portland police he was sitting in a car at Northeast Sixth Avenue and East Burnside Streetaround 6:30 p.m. July 28 when Lopez approached him and smashed one of the car's windows before hitting him in the head with a handgun. Lopez also reportedly fired one round before leaving the area, the victim said.

Investigating officers reportedly believe the altercation was over money.

The victim told police he believes Lopez drives a white truck and lives in a tent near Northeast Seventh Avenue and Northeast Everett Street.

Around 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Portland officers found the white truck and arrested Lopez at a tent near Southeast Eighth Avenue and Southeast Grant Street. When Lopez was arrested, police also found the handgun allegedly used in the assault.

Lopez's arraignment was set for Monday.
