Union Gospel Mission In Portland Serves Hundreds On Christmas Day
Two hundred pounds of ham. Sixty gallons of hot coffee. Nearly 100 pie. It was Christmas Day and Union Gospel Mission was serving hundreds.
PORTLAND, OR – As they have for years, Union Gospel Mission in Portland opened their doors for the needy on Christmas. Hundreds of people showed up.
More than 130 volunteers showed up to help prepare meals for the homeless.
The mission had received 200 pounds of ham, 60 gallons of coffee, Ambrosia fruit salad and dinner rolls with butter.

There were also nearly 100 pies.

- Each of the 500 guests who showed up not only got a free meal, they left with a gift bag that included several items, including:
- a scarf;
- gloves;
- hand warmers;
- a flashlight;
- a hygiene kit; and
- a giant home baked cookie.
"This is my first Christmas homeless," one guest, who only wanted to be identified as Randy, said. "It's like family when you can't go out to see your family.
"It's like a big family."
