Wilson High School Principal Brian Chatard Resigns, Apologizes

In a letter sent Thursday evening, Brian Chatard apologized for his sudden absence and said that he has resigned. He did not explain why.

PORTLAND, OR – Wilson High School got the answer to one big question Thursday night. Principal Brian Chatard will not be coming back.

At the same, it was left with more questions such as why did Chatard – who had been principal since 21012 –leave and what happens next.

Parents and staff received a surprising message last week that Chatard "is out of the office."

The message from Chatard does little to answer those questions.

"I have shared with friends and colleagues that the 24/7 life of the principal takes its toll.," Chatard wrote.

"It is important for me to acknowledge and take responsibility for my recent lapse in judgment and to step back at this time so the school can move forward."

When Chatard left last week, the school was told that things were okay with Vice Principal Maude Lamont, who has been at Wilson for 15 years, in charge.

Portland Public Schools did not respond immediately to questions about whether Lamont would remain in charge, whether there would be a search for a new full-time principal, and whether there was more to be said about Chatard's departure.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
