Perkiomen Creek Sojourn Slated for June 9

Local watershed hosts its own river fun.

While some have been gearing up for the Schuylkill River Sojourn for months, others may not quite be ready for a 112-mile guided canoe or kayak trip. Local river riders can enjoy their own version along the Perkiomen Creek instead.

This Saturday, June 9 (with a raindate of Saturday, June 16),  will host its own local version of the famed trip. Starting at 9 a.m., boaters will enter the creek at Red Fox Park in Schwenksville. Teams will paddle along a seven-mile stretch of the creek, exiting at Hoy Park in Lower Providence Township.

The fee for the day's activities is $30 for PWC members and $55 for nonmembers. Participants may bring their own boating gear or rent some from the organization. Canoe rentals are $30 for members, $55 for nonmembers. There are a limited number of canoes available from PWC, and reservations are recommended.

The PWC website says that the sojourn will offer more than a scenic trip along the creek.

"Along the way, learn about the human and natural history of the area, enjoy your lunch on an island, and help us assess the health of the creek through a macro-biotic survey," said the site.

Participants are invited to bring a lunch with them. PWC also recommends guests bring along a water bottle, sunscreen and a snack. The sojourn is expected to end around 2 p.m. The planned river route is outlined online.

Parking will be available in the PWC parking lot, across from the launch site. There is a limited amount of transportation back to the lot after the sojourn. Guests are recommended to find a friend for a ride from Hoy back to PWC.
