Patch Pet of the Month: Don't Let My Plain Name Fool You

Do you have room in your heart and home for Chip?

They call me Chip.

I’m not a potato chip. I’m not I a computer chip. I’m not even a “chip off the old block.” I’m just plain Chip. Maybe that’s why I’ve been here at Angel Ridge for so long. I’m plain to people. Basic black lab mix. No speckles or fancy markings. But those who know me see my shining personality and when they call out, “Chip!” I perk right up.

The sunlight reveals what a handsome, powerful boy I am. You can see every hair of my short, shiny coat. After a few minutes of excitement at getting some outside time, I settle down quite a bit and am easier to handle on leash. With regular walks that would improve even more. I love to fetch as most labs do. And I will even bring the ball back most of the time, too!

I am one of those dogs that crave direction. Unlike children, I really do like being told what to do. My eyes will study your face, searching for the next thing that I should do. I want to please and I really try hard. If you say “sit,” I hop to it. I do like treats and will work for them, but often with me, praise is enough of a treat.

If I was adopted, my person would be my world. I would be a great dog to train, because I am smart and learn quickly. I already know a variety of basic commands including: sit, paw, down and speak. The most important thing about me is that when people are calm around me, I reflect it back at them.

If you want to rough-house, I’m game for that too, but I don’t advise it. I am all muscle, and getting me all worked up could result in some bumps and bruises as I don’t always realize how strong I am.

The best family for me would be one with adults only or who have older children. A healthy, active senior person would love me too, as long as they wanted a walking partner and learned how to handle me on leash.

I am not wild about other dogs, but I pay little attention to them when I am outside on a walk with someone. My focus is on the person at the other end of the leash, or of course, the grass and ground around me. I am sure there are some dogs out there I could get along with just fine, but I would be perfectly happy to be your one and only.

There are a lot of plain old black labs out there and black dogs are overlooked way too often. Please give me a chance to show my individuality and uniqueness. Remember my name—it’s Chip, but you can call me anything you want if you choose me to be a member of your family.
