A Pittsburgh-based company is making a huge investment in the area. Patch provides the details.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The recently finalized partnership between U.S. Steel and Japan-based Nippon Steel already is paying dividends for the Pittsburgh area.

U.S. Steel is submitting an air construction permit for a new $100 million slag recycler at its Edgar Thomson Plant for approval from the Allegheny County Health Department. The Edgar Thomson Plant, located about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh in Braddock is where basic steel production takes place.

After permit approval, engineering planning will be finalized, and construction is expected to begin next year.

So what is a slag recycler?

A slag recycler helps give new life to the byproducts of steelmaking—such as providing ingredients for cement. It provides an opportunity to reduce air emissions and waste that would have otherwise gone to a landfill, while also generating additional revenue through the sale of byproducts.

U.S. Steel also plans $200 million in improvements in its hot strip mall in Gary, Indiana, to optimize its production costs. Located on the south shore of Lake Michigan, the plant is U.S. Steel's largest manufacturing plant.
