3 Pittsburgh Hospitals Among Best In U.S.: New National Ranking

The hospitals were ranked based on quality metrics from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and several national surveys.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Three Pittsburgh hospitals are among 26 Pennsylvania medical facilities ranked among the nation's best in a new report from Newsweek.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia is the top-ranked Pennsylvania hospital in Newsweek and data partner Statista’s America’s Best In-State Hospitals 2025 ranking, which lists more than 700 medical centers nationwide.

3. Allegheny General Hospital (26)

The 2025 best in-state hospitals list features 5,000 medical facilities, located throughout all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The hospitals were ranked based on quality metrics from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and national surveys, including:

  • The American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey of Hospitals Database, an online nationwide survey among medical professionals;
  • Results from Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems patient-experience surveys; and
  • Voluntary implementation surveys on PROMs (patient-reported outcome measures).
  • Recommendations from doctors, hospital administrators, and other medical experts

The hospitals were evaluated based on a scoring model with four components: Hospital quality metrics score (45 percent), hospital recommendations from peers (36.5 percent), patient experience score (15 percent) and a PROMs implementation score (3.5 percent).
