9 Weapons, Drugs, Cash Seized Near Pittsburgh Child Care Center

Pursuing a trespassing suspect, police found an arsenal of weapons, a variety of drugs and a large amount of cash in an apartment.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Police investigating a trespassing complaint at a Squirrel Hill child care center found a cache of weapons, a variety of drugs and cash in a nearby apartment. One man has been arrested in connection with the incident and police are searching for a second.

Pittsburgh Public Safety on Tuesday released details of the Sept. 13 incident in which officers responded to reports of an attempted trespass of a locked child care center in the 5600 block of Solway Street. While en route, the caller informed dispatch they had watched the suspect walk across an alley and enter an apartment building.

Officers made contact with a man through the door of a second-floor apartment. He said he was staying there with a friend. When he opened the door, police told him he was being detained for the trespass attempt and suspected possible burglary of the apartment.

Officers observed multiple firearms, narcotics, and paraphernalia in plain view and obtained a search warrant. The search resulted in the recovery of nine firearms - including four long rifles and five handguns, ammunition, marijuana, mushrooms, packaging materials, suspected fentanyl and more than $2,200 in cash.

Travis Hickly, 34, was arrested on scene on several outstanding warrants and faces multiple felony firearms and narcotics-related charges, as well as criminal attempt trespass and providing false identification to law enforcement. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

Additionally, a warrant has been issued for Michael Olds, 24, for conspiracy, persons not to possess and prohibited acts.

Public safety officials said there is no evidence of any direct or indirect threat made to the child care center and the initial trespass incident is considered to be an isolated event.

The investigation is ongoing.
