Code Red Heat Advisory Issued For Pittsburgh Area

PITTSBURGH, PA — Allegheny County is activating a Code Red Heat Advisory for Thursday and Friday as temperatures will be risky to elderly people and others.

The high temperature tomorrow is expected to be in the mid-90s, according to the National Weather Service. The high on Friday will be around 90.

Cooling centers in the City of Pittsburgh and other municipalities across the county, including many senior centers, will be open to provide relief from the heat. Some locations will offer extended hours to ensure access to safe, cool spaces.

When operating as a cooling center, senior centers will welcome residents of any age. The Department of Human Services is also taking additional actions including outreach to older adults, children, and people experiencing homelessness, in coordination with the City of Pittsburgh and other municipalities.

The latest list of open cooling centers, activation dates, and updates are posted at acdhs.org/codered.Residents who need assistance connecting to a cooling center or seeking other non-emergency assistance are encouraged to call 211.
