Consumer Alert Issued For Pittsburgh Supermarket & Eatery

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for the IGA Market On Broadway-Las Palmas supermarket on Broadway Avenue in Beechview for numerous health code violations.

An inspection Wednesday revealed rodent droppings behind the drink storage and rear storage areas, as well as too many to count large black flies on the sales floor and in the rear storage area.

Discarded during the inspection were 36 cans with large dents on the sales floor and three packages of moldy strawberries in the produce cooler.

Numerous food items on the sales floor and at the taco stand were found to be at unsafe temperatures. Ice cream inside the rear freezers was found melted. Multiple thaw cycles were evident by the separation of milk and solids inside cartons.

Almost all prepared food in the coolers lacked discard dates.

Blood was found on the floor of the walk-in freezer and inside chest freezers in the meat area. Raw meat found on the floor. of the main walk-in cooler.

A can opener in the hot foods area was soiled with debris.

A restaurant with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days. Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
