Consumer Alert Issued For Popular Pittsburgh Restaurant

The Allegheny County Health Department found multiple violations at this Pittsburgh eatery.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Chuan Xiang Hui on Atwood Street for numerous health code violations.

An inspection on Wednesday revealed four boxes of dry goods with mouse droppings and urine. The boxes had been chewed and some individual bags of food had been chewed and spilled within the boxes. Mouse droppings were directly touching rice flour and cumin seeds. The affected boxes included cumin seeds, Szechuan dry red pepper, fermented broken vegetables and rice flour.

There were too many to count mouse droppings on the surrounding shelves and on the floor beneath the shelves, behind the grease interceptor and behind buckets of soy sauce. There were chewed paper products and nesting materials in a back storage hallway.

A half-dozen flies were observed in and around the grease interceptor.

The restaurant was lacking a three-compartment sink in the kitchen and does not have a warewashing area. The deli slicer blade was soiled with old food residue and old food debris.

A restaurant with a consumer alert placard is allowed to operate for a temporary period not exceeding 10 days. Another inspection is conducted either prior to the expiration of the temporary period upon request of the eatery owner or on the tenth day.
