Deadly Storms Pummel Pittsburgh Area: Latest Info

A line of severe storms cut a swath of destruction across Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Two people died and widespread devastation occurred throughout Western Pennsylvania Tuesday as a line of severe storms moved through the region.

As of 6:30 a.m on Wednesday, more than 215,000 Duquesne Light and about 155,000 West Penn Power customers remained without electrical service.

Duquesne Light said in a social media post Wednesday morning that it was still assessing the damage and did not provide any estimated restoration times.

Xfinity reported widespread Internet outages and also did not provide an estimated restoration time.

“We’re aware of numerous reports of power outages, downed power lines, poles and trees and collapsed structures throughout the city,” Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey said in a statement. “Response teams are actively working to assess these situations and coordinate efforts to respond and resolve them as quickly and safely as possible.”

Pittsburgh Public Schools, the region’s largest school district, was among many districts that canceled classes Wednesday.

Allegheny County Emergency Services reported two people died as a result of the storms.

A man was electrocuted by live wires on St. Martin Street in the city’s South Side Slopes around 7 p.m. Details on the circumstances of the death of the second person were not immediately available.

PennDOT on Wednesday morning announced several road closures in the eastern suburbs of Plum, Oakmont, Verona and Penn Hills.

According to the National Weathet Service, a peak wind gust of 71.3 mph was recorded Tuesday at Pittsburgh International Airport. That’s the third-highest gust on record after 83 mph in July 1992 and 75 mph in April 2020.
