Distracted Driving: See Number Of Pittsburgh-Area Citations Issued

The number of distracted driving citations issued in Allegheny County might surprise you.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Pennsylvania had more than 10,000 distracted driving offenses between 2020 and 2024, and Allegheny County had the most of any of the state's 67 counties.

According to statistics released recently by the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts, Allegheny County had 897 distracted driving offenses in that five-year period. That accounted for nearly 9 percent of all distracted driving tickets written in the entire state.

Montgomery County near Philadelphia had the second-highest number of offenders with 839 citations written, accounting for 8.1 percent of the state total.

Cameron County had the lowest number of distracted driving offenses, with just three reported in the five-year period. Cameron County's population is about 4,440.

Statewide, 30 percent of distracted driving offenders were in their 20s, and 71 percent of distracted drivers were men.

Fifty-seven percent of all the citations issued were issued by Pennsylvania State Police and 43 percent by local municipal police.

In Pennsylvania, distracted driving citations in Pennsylvania can be issued for using headphones while driving, using a handheld mobile phone while driving a commercial vehicle or texting while driving. Texting includes sending, reading or writing a text-based message.
