Ex-Pitt Doc, Professor Accused Of Trying To Kill Wife: Latest Info
Gerhardt Konig, a former Pittsburgh doctor and University of Pittsburgh professor, tried to push his wife off of a cliff, police said.

HONOLULU HI — Formal charges have been lodged and bail has been set for the former UPMC doctor and University of Pittsburgh professor who allegedly tried to push his wife off of a cliff in Hawaii on Monday.
Gerhardt Konig, 46, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder. Honolulu police said his bail was set at $5 million after the case was conferred with the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Star-Advertiser of Honolulu reported.
Konig of Maui, was taken into custody Monday evening near Pali Highway following a brief foot pursuit.

Police said Konig was on Oahu with his wife Monday morning when he attempted to push her off a hiking trail and struck her in the head with a rock. She was taken to an area hospital and currently is in critical condition.
Konig's wife, Areille Konig, 36, reportedly told authorities that her husband also had assaulted her with closed fists before attempting to shove her off the hiking trail.

According to the Daily Mail, the couple has been married since 2018 and lives in a $1.5 million home in Maui.

Per KITV, Gerhardt Konig practices anesthesiology in Kahului and works for Maui Health, which issued the following statement on Wednesday:
"Dr. Konig is employed by an independent entity contracted to provide medical services at various medical facilities on Maui, including Maui Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Konig’s medical staff privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center have been suspended pending investigation. Maui Health takes these concerns and the safety of its patients very seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate."
According to his LinkedIn profile, Konig received his medical degree at Pitt and then spent nine years employed by UPMC as an anesthesiology resident and staff anesthesiologist. He then spent seven years at Pitt's School of Medicine as a clinical instructor and assistant professor.
He has spent the last two years as a partner in The Anesthesia Medical Group in Maui, according to the profile.
