Former Pirates Player Convicted Of Killing Family Member

PITTSBURGH, PA — A former Pittsburgh Pirates player has been found guilty of fatally shooting his father-in-law and seriously wounding his mother in law.

Former Bucs pitcher Dan Serafini did the shooting in 2021, killing Gary Spohr, 70 and wounding his wife, Wendy Wood, 68.

According to KCRA-TV, the jury also found Serafini guilty of special circumstances in the attacks, lying in wait and use of a gun, and first-degree burglary.

Serafini, 51, will be sentenced on Aug. 18. He faces the possibility of life in prison.

Serafini spent seven years in the big leagues. In addition to playing for the Pirates in 2000, he also played for the Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs.
