Health Department Shuts Down Pittsburgh Bar

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has ordered the closure of the Upscale Elite Sports Lounge on Penn Avenue in the Strip District for numerous health code violations.

The bar was operating without a valid health permit as a nightclub with food and liquor service. No plans were submitted to the health department before construction of the tavern began and the owners did not obtain a health department inspection before opening.

A Dec. 20 inspection also revealed the bar is unable to sanitize items because there are no three-compartment sinks in the kitchen and at the bar. There was no mop sink.

There was evidence of smoking in the kitchen. A home-style refrigerator and microwave were in use.

A "closed" placard is posted at an establishment when an imminent health hazard is identified at a restaurant or kitchen if it has been operating without proper permits. It is unlawful to operate a food facility with a "closed" placard.
