How To Get A New PA License Plate: Updated Info On New Version

Pennsylvania has changed its license plates. Here's how to obtain one.

PENNSYLVANIA — The first major redesign of Pennsylvania license plates in 25 years now is available from the state Department of Transportation in what state officials say is an attempt to commemorate America's upcoming 250th birthday in 2026.

Out is the blue, white and gold design promoting the state tourism website VisitPA.com. In is an all-white plate with blue numerals bearing the slogan "Let Freedom Ring" in red and an illustration of the Liberty Bell.

Nearly 11,700 plates already have been ordered, state officials said.

“Pennsylvania is the birthplace of American freedom – and ahead of 2026, Pennsylvanians can ‘Let Freedom Ring’ all across our Commonwealth with one of our new license plates,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said in a statement.

Here is how to get a new license plate:

  1. Fill out the application.
  2. Follow the instructions.
    • Check the box for the new Liberty Bell plate. 
    • Complete your information as listed on your current registration card. 
  3. Mail the form to this address: Pennsylvania Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Post Office Box 68593   Harrisburg, PA 17106-8593.

Replacing a current standard plate will cost $13. The fee increases on July 1.

The previous standard plate inventory will be used before the state fully transitions to the new design and issues it automatically.
