Legendary Pittsburgh TV News Anchor Announces Retirement

One of the biggest names in Pittsburgh broadcasting is calling it a career. Get the details here.

PITTSBURGH, PA — After a four-decade career at WPXI-TV, news anchor David Johnson announced his retirement Monday. Johnson's retirement from anchoring the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, revealed on the station website, is effective Dec. 13.

According to his station biography, Johnson was part of the longest-running anchor team in Pittsburgh TV history, along with Peggy Finnegan before her retirement in 2020. The pair were named 2016 Broadcasters of the Year by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, the first anchor team to win that presigioius honor.

Johnson and Finnegan also received the 2015 Press Club of Western Pennsylvania's President's Award for career achievement in journalism.

Johnson has won an Emmy Award for his work at WPXI, as well as a number of Pittsburgh Press Club Golden Quills and other regional and local honors.

The Florida native has a bachelor's degree in broadcasting from the University of Florida. Before coming to WPXI-TV, he held on-air positions in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Chattanooga, Orlando and Atlanta.
