Aspinwall, PA, Pennsylvania — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Lisa Tedesco who nominated Amelia of Aspinwall, PA, Pennsylvania.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Amelia has volunteered with Grow Living Stones for almost two years. The Pittsburgh-based non-profit rescues food from restaurants that would otherwise be thrown away. The meals are then served on Sundays to people from underserved neighborhoods, those living with disabilities, older adults, and people who are just lonely. Any leftovers are packed in plastic bags and given to people to eat during the week. With the city of Pittsburgh's plastic bag ban, Amelia realized the group needed to transition to using recyclable bags. She applied for a youth grant and received money to order 600 reusable bags, which she handed out at a recent Sunday church supper. She is promoting sustainability and kindness at the same time.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Amelia is an honor student, but she measures true success as how she treats others. She understands that even a small gesture can have a huge positive impact on others.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Amelia!
