Major Retailer With Dozens Of PA Locations Declares Bankruptcy

A store that can be found in virtually any mall in Pennsylvania has filed for bankruptcy. Patch provides the details.

PENNSYLVANIA — A major retailer with teen appeal has filed for bankruptcy, casting doubt on the future of its dozens of stores in the state.

Claire's, a major mall staple, will continue to remain open while it explores "strategic alternates," and has said it will uphold its commitments to customers, employees and partner while it seeks to navigate its way out of rocky financial waters.

"This decision is difficult, but a necessary one. Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire's and its stakeholders," Claire's CEO Chris Cramer said in a statement. "We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives."
