A new supermarket supercenter chain soon will arrive in the Pittsburgh market. Get the details here.
PITTSBURGH, PA —Western Pennsylvania's already competitive grocery market is about to get more crowded.
Meijer has confirmed that it plans to open locations in Pittsburgh.
A Forbes profile of the chain states that Meijer is a family-owned grocery chain operating in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Its supercenter stores offer groceries but also have departments such as fashion, automotive, home decor, health and beauty care, pharmacy, electronics and banking.

“Our expansion into this market reflects our commitment to serving more customers with fresh, affordable groceries, one-stop shopping, and outstanding service,” the company said in a statement. “We look forward to introducing ourselves to these communities and are committed to being an active and engaged neighbor."
Meijer did not identify where it plans to open or when its initial locations will debut. One obvious possibility is West Mifflin on the site of the former Century III Mall. The mall is in the process of being razed, which will leave acres of vacant property available.

The Meijer announcement comes on the heels of Wegmans announcing it will open its first Western Pennsylvania store soon. The grocery chain plans to open a location in Cranberry in 2027 next to the Lemieux Sports Complex on Cool Springs Drive.
Earlier this week, Giant Eagle - long the region's dominant grocer - announced it was making a $100 million investment into its stores.
Giant Eagle says it will invest millions of dollars to remodel a dozen supermarkets in Pennsylvania and renovate and expand more than 60 in-store pharmacy departments. Customers also can expect new shopping carts.
