Suspect Dead In Officer-Involved Shooting, Pittsburgh SWAT Incident

Police exchanged gunfire with a man while attempting to serve a search warrant in a Pittsburgh neighborhood Friday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting during SWAT team activity in the city's Allentown neighborhood Friday morning.

Allegheny County police are investigating the shooting, which occurred as officers were executing a warrant related to a Dec. 24 incident.

On Christmas Eve, police were dispatched to the 800 block of East Warrington Avenue for reports of a man with a gun. Officers encountered the man, who entered a nearby building. Investigators subsequently were able to identify the man, who had previous felony convictions and was not permitted to possess a firearm.

This morning at around 6 a.m., the city police SWAT team was attempting to serve a search warrant for an an apartment on East Warrington Avenue when the man fired multiple shots. Officers returned the gunfire and the man barricaded himself inside. During the ensuing standoff, an officer shot the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The county police homicide unit is investigating. The status of the officers involved in the incident will be determined by city police.
