WEST MIFFLIN, PA — As the razing of Century III Mall continues, the state is contributing $1 million toward the demolition costs and property rehabilitation of the once-bustling retail complex.

The funding was awarded through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, a grant program for the design, acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.

State Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-West Mifflin, who announced the funding, said the goal of the grant is to turn the Century III Mall site "to turn it back into a hub of activity for our community offering a place to eat, shop and enjoy while creating hundreds of local jobs.

“After many meetings with the property owners, community stakeholders and other public officials, we are making real progress to redeveloping and revitalizing the area.

Pictures posted recently on the Century III Mall Memories Facebook page show significant progress is being made in the demolition. The former JC Penney store has been nearly razed entirely. From one vantage point, it's possible to see straight through the building and out the other side.

Once one of the largest malls in the world, Century III's interior closed in 2019. J.C. Penney, which had an exterior entrance, was the mall's last remaining store; it went out of business in 2020.
