The proposed budget would establish the new $30 million grant program would be in addition to the funding already distributed annually to fire companies. The grants would be used to meet the individual needs of fire departments.
Shapiro also wants to establish a pilot program to help municipal fire companies work together and share resources more efficiently through cooperative service agreements.
Additionally, Shapiro wants the state to cover the cost of annual cancer screening for firefighters because of the chemical exposures and other health risks they face on the job.
"I’ve seen the very best of Pennsylvania’s fire service in action, and I’m committed to making sure
the Commonwealth continues to have their backs," Shapiro said.
