PA Special Election Results: See Which Party Now Controls State House

Control of the state House was up for grabs in a Western Pennsylvania special election on Tuesday.

HARRISBURG, PA — Dan Goughnour's overwhelming victory in a special election in Western Pennsylvania Tuesday allows Democrats to maintain control of the state House by a single seat.

In the race for the 35th Legislative District seat, Goughnour easily defeated Republican Charles D. Davis. According to the Allegheny County Elections Division, Goughner received 6,797 votes to Davis' 3,751. The results are unofficial until verified by the county elections board.

The special election was held to fill the vacancy caused by the January death of Democratic Rep. Matt Gergely.

Goughnour's victory means Democrats have a 102-101 seat edge over Republicans and will be able to keep Democratic House Speaker Joanna McClinton of Philadelphia as the chamber's top official.

Goughnour, of McKeesport, has spent 16 years as a McKeesport police officer and is a current McKeesport Area School District director.

The 35th Legislative District near Pittsburgh includes the Mon Valley communities of Clairton, Duquesne, McKeeseport, Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, Munhall, Port Vue, Versailles, West Homestead,
Whitaker, White Oak and a portion of West Mifflin.
