PA Turnpike Road Widening Project Near Pittsburgh Advances

A bridge is being demolished as part of the initial steps of a $300 million project to widen the PA Turnpike between Pittsburgh and Irwin.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, PA — The long-term widening of a 10-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Monroeville and Irwin is proceeding with the removal of a bridge over the toll road in Penn Township.

Demolition work on the bridge will continue into October, with construction of the cul-de-sac beginning in the fall. The project is expected to be completed next June.

Crews next month will begin the permanent removal of the Harvison Road Bridge linking Harvison and Pleasant Valley roads. The span will be demolished and the turnpike commission will build a cul-de-sac in its place. The commission determined that replacing the bridge was not an option because of high engineering and construction costs.
