Fatal Hit-And-Run Occurs On Pittsburgh-Area Portion Of PA Turnpike

A deadly incident resulted in the closure of a Western Pennsylvania portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for several hours on Friday.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — A portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Western Pennsylvania was closed for several hours overnight after a person was fatally struck by a vehicle on the toll road in Beaver County.

The eastbound lanes of the turnpike between the Beaver Valley and Cranberry exits were closed at around 2:30 a.m. when the incident occurred. That portion of the turnpike reopened at around 6 a.m., according to a turnpike commission social media post.

Pennsylvania State Police said that Khalil Mutadabur, 21, got out of his vehicle after it became disabled at mile marker 14.1 in New Sewickley Township.

Police said Mutadabur was walking westbound along the eastbound lanes of the turnpike when he was hit and killed. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

Mutadabur was a 2023 graduate of Shaler Area High School.

"The Shaler Area School District community is deeply saddened by today's sudden passing of Khalil Mutadabur, a 2023 graduate of Shaler Area High School who died tragically this morning in a hit-and-run accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Beaver County," Shaler superintendent Bryan O'Black said in a statement.

"Our heartfelt condolences are with Khalil's family and friends, and I encourage all who knew Khalil to keep him and his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

State police are continuing to investigate the incident.
