Pirates Makes Major Decison On 2026 Manager
The Pirates have made a decision on whether or not to retain Pittburgh native Don Kelly as manager.
PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pirates did not have a winning record under manager Don Kelly after former manager Derek Shelton was fired in May.
They went 59-65 under his leadership after an abysmal 12-26 start under Shelton.
But they still finished in last place by a large margin in the National League Central Division with a 71-91 record. The Bucs last made the post season in 2018 and have only finished above .500 once since then. The had identical 76-win seasons in 2023 and 2024.

Still, the Pirates announced on Monday that Kelly, who was the bench coach under Shelton before becoming manager, will return in 2026. The length and terms of his contract were not disclosed.
Kelly is a Mt. Lebanon native and is married to the sister of former Pirates infielder and current broadcaster Neil Walker.

“Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans -- and he has certainly earned mine,” Pirates owner Bob Nutting said in a statement.
“Donnie took over the team at a true low point. Since then, we’ve seen meaningful progress, not just in the clubhouse culture, but on the field. His connection to the community and passion for the franchise make him more than just a manager. He is a Pittsburgher; he is part of our community. He’s the right fit, at the right time, and is the right person to lead us forward."
Said Pirates general manager Ben Cherington, whose own job is reportedly in jeopardy: “Donnie is an elite communicator. He is deeply trusted by our players because he’s credible, consistent, and unafraid of tough conversations.
“His background as both a scout and a coach gives him a rare perspective: patience when it’s needed, and an unwavering belief in players’ ability to improve. Above all, he values people and winning. His ability to adjust, lead, and do the hard work makes him the right leader.”
Kelly said that he is proud to continue leading the Pirates.
“Our clubhouse is full of players who care deeply about each other, about winning, and about representing Pittsburgh the right way, " he said.
"I was a Pirates fan first. I know our fans deserve a team that delivers on the field, and it’s on me to make sure we reach that standard.”
