Pittsburgh Infant Dies After Allegedly Being Assaulted By Babysitter

A Pittsburgh man allegedly was responsible for the death of an infant in his care, police said.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A baby has died three days after allegedly being assaulted by a Pittsburgh man.

According to city police, Dominic Pinnick, 18, initially was charged with aggravated assault regarding the 10-month-old baby he way babysitting in the 7100 block of Kendron Street in Homewood on Saturday.

Police on Monday said the baby has died. The charges are expected to be upgraded to homicide.

According to a criminal complaint, first responders were called to the home for a baby allegedly falling from a bed. The baby was taken to UPMC Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville, where doctors discovered the baby had suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed. A portion of the child's skull had to be removed before the death occurred.

According to police, Pinnick told authorities that he had smacked the child's head against bed posts when the baby would not stop crying.

The baby’s name and official cause of death will be released by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to authorities.

Pinnick is being held in the Allegheny County Jail. According to court records, he faces a preliminary hearing on Aug. 1.
