Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey is vowing a thorough investigation into the death of Courtney Carter, who was struck by a car while on her bike.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Mayor Ed Gainey is promising improvements at the site where a nine-year-old girl died Sunday after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bike.
Gainey late Monday issued a statement expressing condolences to the family of Courtney Carter, who was hit by the vehicle on Rosedale Street near Tacoma Street in the city's Homewood South neighborhood.
First responders found the girl lying in the street with traumatic injuries. She was taken to Children's Hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.

"Even one fatal traffic crash is too many, and we know that there is still work to be done to reach our goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries," Gainey said.
"Our collision investigation unit is actively working to investigate this incident. Once the investigation is complete, our Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team will complete a site visit to determine what improvements can be made to ensure that this never happens again."
