The 16-year-old suspect sustained a laceration to his hand. He was treated at the scene by medics before being transported to police headquarters.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said Wednesday night that the boy had been charged with three counts of aggravated assault, possessing instruments of crime and possession of a weapon on school property.

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. in a school hallway.

It's unclear how the teen got the knife into the school, as students must pass through metal detectors when they enter the building.

"That's a question for the school," Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz said. "I really don't know what their security measures are on any given day."

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey issued the following statement on the stabbings:

"First and most importantly, my thoughts are with the students who were injured, their families, and every young person who is feeling shaken by this incident.

"To the students — I want you to know that what took place today does not define who you are or what you deserve. You deserve to feel safe. You deserve to be seen and heard. And you deserve the chance to grow, to learn, and to simply be young without the weight of fear."
