Severe Storms Possible For Pittsburgh Area

The National Weather Service has increased the area in which severe storms could occur in and around Pittsburgh Wednesday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania residents don't just have to worry about the extreme heat on Wednesday. They also need to keep watchful eyes on the skies as severe storms are possible.

The National Weather Service says severe storms could develop, primarily this afternoon and evening in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and Northern West Virginia. The main threats from such storms will be damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours.

State College-based AccuWeather also is calling for heavy weather, with storms bringing hail and causing flash flooding. The Weather Channel believes the primary threat will be significant wind gusts.

Before the storms arrive, expect near-record heat. Temperatures are expected to top out in the mid- to upper 90s.

The Weather Service predicts the chance for storms in the area will remain on Thursday and Friday. There is no indication yet whether any of these storms could be severe.
